Wood-fired, the Neapolitan way

Kids' menu

World of Pizzas Bar & Grill

This isn't regular pizza. It's wood-fired, with a global entry passport.

The owner is a true foodie, and it shows. Trust us. It starts with fresh ingredients, imported from around the world, Italian flour and tomatoes among them, and a crust that comes out of the wood fire blistered, Neapolitan-style. Then the menu travels: Baja Chipotle, Tikka Masala, or a Classic Margherita if you're staying close to home. And it's built for families: a kids' menu, outdoor seating, live music, and a bar for the grown-ups.

Our tip

Get the Family Feast for the table (two large pizzas, garlic knots and a salad), then add one world pie for the grown-ups to pass around.

This Friday, 30 Oct · Live music, 7 to 9pm

The JJ Warren Band brings country, blues and southern rock to the patio crowd, including songs of their own. It's a local band, it wraps up by 9, and it's early enough to bring the kids. Get there by 6:30 to grab a table and have the pizza ordered before the first song.

Partner. Our picks are never for sale.

Turkey countdown

The single most-asked question of Thanksgiving week, answered.

Frozen turkeys take days, not hours, to thaw in the fridge, and the time in the oven depends on the size of the bird. Put in the weight and your dinner time, and we'll give you every step, from freezer to carving, with reminders for your calendar.

Turkey countdown

When does the turkey go in?

Tell us the size of your bird and when you want to eat. We'll work backwards to when it leaves the freezer, so nobody's eating at 9pm.

Turkey trots

A turkey trot is a fun run held around Thanksgiving. Nobody chases a turkey.

It's an American tradition: families run, jog or walk a short course on Thanksgiving morning (or a weekend before), often in silly hats, usually for a good cause, and then go home and eat with a clear conscience. You don't need to be a runner. Most have a short kids' race, and plenty of people walk the whole thing. Answer three questions and we'll tell you which one is yours.

Where to eat Thursday

Let someone else carve.

Plenty of Loudoun restaurants serve a proper Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, from a family-friendly turkey plate to a white-tablecloth feast. Others will cook the whole dinner for you to pick up and serve at home. Tell us how many adults and kids are at your table and we'll show you what each option really costs. These book up, so don't leave it until Wednesday.

If you are frying the turkey

  • Outdoors only, on flat ground, well away from the house, the deck and the garage.
  • Fully thawed and dry. A frozen or wet bird makes hot oil boil over.
  • Never put water on a grease fire. Get everyone back and call 911.
  • Kids and dogs stay well clear of the fryer, before and after.
  • The used oil: never down the drain. Small amounts can cool in a jar and go in the trash. The county landfill takes up to 5 gallons for a fee, but it's closed on Thanksgiving and closes at noon Wednesday.

Picking up family

Grandma lands at Dulles at 5. Here's how that goes smoothly.

Thanksgiving week is the busiest time of year to fly. Here's the free waiting lot so you're not circling the airport, the Metro stations in Loudoun and where you can and can't leave a car, and the days to avoid if anyone's still booking.

Flying into Dulles

  • Wait at the cell phone lot, not the arrivals curb. It's free, on Autopilot Drive near the Dulles Marriott: take the Services exit, bear right onto Aviation Drive, then right onto Autopilot Drive. One-hour limit, and you stay with the car. No restrooms.
  • Check the flight before you leave home: 703-572-6240.
  • The busiest days last year were the Friday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after. The Sunday after was the busiest day in TSA history. Leave extra time for the drop-off.

Coming by Metro

  • The Silver Line stops in Loudoun at Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn.
  • The county garages at Loudoun Gateway (22495 Lockridge Rd) and Ashburn South (43625 Croson Ln) cost $4.95 a day and are free on federal holidays, including Thanksgiving. No overnight parking, so don't leave a car there for the weekend.
  • On Thanksgiving Day last year, Metro ran a reduced holiday schedule from 6am to midnight. We'll post the 2026 times when Metro announces them.
  • Loudoun County Transit doesn't run on Thanksgiving and runs a much smaller schedule on Friday.

The weekend that starts the season

The day after Thanksgiving, the holidays officially begin.

In America, the Friday after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday, the big shopping day, and it's also when many families go and choose a Christmas tree. In Loudoun, that means cutting your own at a farm on the mountain. Santa makes an early appearance on Sunday. The town tree lightings come a week later, and we've noted those too.

The tree lightings are next weekend

Loudoun's tree lightings start the weekend after Thanksgiving, not during it. Leesburg lights the Town Green tree on Sat 5 Dec at 6pm, and the free Holiday Fine Arts & Crafts Show fills Ida Lee that weekend (Sat 9am–4pm, Sun 10am–4pm). The other towns' dates will be in our holiday lights guide, out in mid-November.
